FAQ: Tanning Application

The secret to a flawless tan is as much about pre-tan preparation, including exfoliation as it is about the actual application, and post-tan maintenance. Following each of these steps, including these trouble-shooting tips, will ensure you obtain the best result and the longest lasting tan.

PRE-TAN PREPARATION

One of the most critical steps prior to a tanning application is to prepare the skin in order to achieve a good base for the tan.

Think of this as similiar to painting a house. To achieve the best result, the surface to be painted must first be prepared and cleaned. Avoiding these steps can result in paint that is difficult to apply (due to impurities left on the surface), and an end result that can be uneven and blotchy, and with colour that fades quickly or unevenly.

It's the same with your skin and applying a self-tan!

Preparing and cleaning the skin properly beforehand, will create a clean smooth surface for your tan and allow the most even absorption of product.

  • Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate...

    • Exfoliate your body thoroughly but gently prior to applying your tan.

    • Don't forget feet, knees and elbows!

    • Remember the skin completed replaces itself every 4 to 5 weeks. The goal of exfolation is to effectively remove any dead skin and expose the fresh, new skin cells underneath. This will help the skin absorb the tanning solution better, enabling the tan to last longer and fade more evenly.

[The Baiden Mitten is personally one of the best products/methods I've used. Not only has my skin felt amazing after using it, I've found my tan lasts a lot longer (7-10+ days) and wears much more evenly than previously].

  • Hair Removal:

    • Any hair removal should be done after exfoliation to minimise irritation.

    • Shaving should be done 8 hours prior to tanning, or alternately a day or two after the tan. Ensure that all gels / moisturisers are thoroughly rinsed off the skin to avoid any build up which can interfere with your tan.

    • If shaving 1-2 days after a tan, use a new sharp razor and an SLS free body gel / wash (such as Body Shampoo) to lubricate the skin.

    • Waxing and depilatory use should be done a day or two before tanning to minimse irritation.

    • Avoid waxing straight after tanning as this will remove the tan from those areas.
